Why is Dev Deepavali Celebrated?

There are many mythological stories behind celebrating this festival but one of the most accepted stories is that Lord Shiva saved all the deities from the demon Tripurasura by punishing him for his bad deeds. He was killed by Lord Shiva in Kashi only. Millions of Diyas and Candles are lit on this occasion to welcome all the deities. Ganga aarti is performed to worship the Goddess Ganga. The tourists from all parts of the India and world gather in Varanasi to become a part of such a grand festival. They become the spectator of this festival and enjoy the festival vibes. People take bath in the holy river Ganga and then light diyas.

Every year some celebrities or great personalities mark their presence in Varanasi to watch the grand celebration. Many programs are also organized by different talented groups. Dev Deepawali is a major Hindu festival celebrated in the pilgrimage city of Varanasi. It is celebrated fifteen days after Deepawali and on the full moon day in the month of Kartik, according to Hindu calendar. It is also a major tourist attraction.

Celebrations of Dev Diwali

Dev Diwali is celebrated with much enthusiasm and fervor by the people of Varanasi and also by the visiting tourists. The festival of Dev Deepawali is mainly celebrated on the river bank and all the ghats of Varanasi stand testimony to the grand occasion. Everyone is mesmerized by the glitter of millions of lamps on the river side.

People start coming to the ghats, well in advance and until evening the ghats are packed with curious onlookers. The crowd consists of both local population and visiting tourists. Stairs along the ghats are lined up with millions of earthen diyas, glittering in the night, that too in the brightness of a Poornima (full moon), the scene becomes much more scintillating. Floating lamps are also released into the water, making the view heavenly. Though, Aarti is performed everyday on Varanasi Ghats; those performed on Dev Deepawali have very grandeur presentation.

Besides the lamp celebration, several other events also take place on the ghats. Teams of artists from various states of the country perform to display their culture and dance forms.

A special event to honour the martyrs is organized at Dashaswamedha Ghat. Amar Jawan Jyoti is build on which police, army and paramilitary personnel lay floral wreath and observe silence in the memory of martyrs.

The Dev Deepavali ("the Diwali of the Gods" or "Festival of Lights of the Gods") is the festival of Kartik Poornima celebrated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. During Dev Deepawali, houses are decorated with oil lamps and coloured designs on their front doors. Firecrackers are burnt at night, processions of decorated deities are taken out into the streets of Varanasi, and oil lamps are set afloat on the river. Owing to the significance and the growing socio-cultural popularity of this festival, it has now also come to be celebrated in nearby districts such as Mirzapur.
