There are different believes in celebrating a special occasion similarly we celebrate a day before Diwali that is known as Choti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi. There are different beliefs about celebrating this festival. I have brought some mythological stories that will tell you the real reason behind celebrating this festival.

The first story is of the demon Narakasura, he was blessed as if no male can kill him, and so Lord Krishna with the help of his wife Satyabhama killed Narakasura and also saved sixteen thousand girls from his palace. These girls were further known as Lord Krishna's other wives.

The second story is of King Bali, he used to spend a lot on charity; as a result, Lord Krishna incarnated himself as a midget (Vamana avatar) and asked for charity. The midget asked only a piece of land that his legs could measure in three steps. The king agreed and as a result, the midget measured the entire earth in his first step, then the universe in his second step, and then Bali’s palace in the third step. But Bali didn’t hesitate and gave everything to him.

Lord Krishna got happy and asked the demon King Bali to have a wish. He wished to have three auspicious days when people can pray for him as well as the god of death. A person who will celebrate this special day will always be filled with wealth and good health. Lord Krishna was happy and he said ‘Tathaastu’.

These are some of the main reasons for celebrating Naraka Chaturdashi and every year people offer diyas to Yama Raja on this day and also celebrate it as Choti Diwali.

Why Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated:

This festival is celebrated every year by performing puja of the goddess Kali who had killed the demon named Narakasura. That’s why the day is known as Narak-Chaturdashi and Kali Chaudas as well. People offer puja to eliminate their laziness and wickedness from their life as well as bring the real light into their life.

The things required for Pooja are oil, flowers, agarbatti, camphor, Diya, sweets, coconut, aarti thali, etc. people believe that washing head and applying kajal to their eyes will keep them away from all the bad sights, the persons related to the tantra consider that practising their mantras at this day would increase their tantra power.

It is also considered that the day is getting celebrated as Hindu God Lord Krishna got victory over the demon Naraksura. People wake up early in the morning apply aromatic oil throughout their bodies before bathing. Then they wear new clothes after bathing offer puja and enjoy some firecrackers in the evening with their family.

The story behind this festival:

According to one of the ancient history of the past, there was a king, Ranti Deva. He was a very spiritual and clever man. He has always involved himself in the religious works and services of mankind. One day, the death of god, Yama, had come to him to get the soul of a king. The king asked Yama that I never did bad work and sin all over my life. Why you came to get hell, Yama answered that a long ago you had returned a hungry priest from your door. That’s why I am here to get you to hell.

The king prayed to Yama to get one year of life more. Yama granted him one year’s life more, and the king met with the saints and told his story to them. They suggested he keep fast at Narak Chaturdashi and offer food to the Priests as well as say sorry to them for your past mistake. In this way, you can get relief from your past sin.

From that day, Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated to become free from all the sins as well as keep away self from going to hell.
