From ancient times until now, the caste system has always held a sturdy base in Indian society. Caste in India was used as an identification of an individual as to which family the person belonged to, which also meant which field of work he was involved in because of his family. The four primary castes of the Hindu community are Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaisya, Shudra. Other than this, there are thousands of sub-castes and communities who form the Indian society.
This form of division eventually gave rise to greed, and the higher castes started oppressing the lower caste. The caste system eventually evolved and gave rise to greater social evils. But in Independent India, as per the law, any discrimination or injustice based on caste is banned. Also, to correct the injustice done before lower or schedule tribe castes, the government initiated a reservation system or ‘quota’ for those coming from ST, SC, and OBC families.
Even though the motive behind the quota system was good, which was to provide jobs and education to those who needed them and were the backward classes of the society, but people soon started using this for unfair purposes like gaining reservation, or acquiring education opportunities or jobs when they didn’t need it and came from a well-to-do family.

Today the caste system is one of the major issues that people are facing. It is basically a system that separate peoples on the basis of their caste. However, it is a very common issue in India. It is present for a very long time in our country. Many people believe in it and many people don’t. It depends on the thinking and mindset of an individual. Problems Due to Caste System
The higher caste children are facing a lot of difficulties in finding jobs. Earlier it was not this difficult to find job. The caste system in India is the paradigmatic ethnographic example of classification of castes. It has its origins in ancient India, and was transformed by various ruling elites in medieval, early-modern, and modern India, especially the Mughal Empire and the British Raj. The collapse of the Mughal era saw the rise of powerful men who associated themselves with kings, priests and ascetics, affirming the regal and martial form of the caste ideal, and it also reshaped many apparently casteless social groups into differentiated caste communities. The British Raj furthered this development, making rigid caste organisation a central mechanism of administration. Between 1860 and 1920, the British formulated the caste system into their system of governance, granting administrative jobs and senior appointments only to Christians and people belonging to certain castes. Social unrest during the 1920s led to a change in this policy. From then on, the colonial administration began a policy of positive discrimination by reserving a certain percentage of government jobs for the lower castes. In 1948, negative discrimination on the basis of caste was banned by law and further enshrined in the Indian constitution; however, the system continues to be practiced in parts of India. There are 3,000 castes and 25,000 sub-castes in India, each related to a specific occupation.
Caste-based differences have also been practised in other regions and religions in the Indian subcontinent, like Nepalese Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. It has been challenged by many reformist Hindu movements, Sikhism, Christianity, by present-day Indian Buddhism. With Indian influences, the caste system is also practiced in Bali and parts of Southeast Asia such as Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.
India after achieving independence in 1947 enacted many affirmative action policies for the upliftment of historically marginalized groups as enforced through its constitution. These policies included reserving a quota of places for these groups in higher education and government employment.
