It was 1918 when Gandhiji in a conference appealed to make Hindi as India’s national language. And after independence after a discussion on 14th September 1949, Hindi was declared as an official language as per Part 17 of Article 373. But many south Indian states strongly opposed this decision. As a result, English was also declared as another official language of India.
The growing opposition and insecurity about Hindi made Nehru think and he proposed to celebrate Hindi Day for the development of language. English was elected for a short time as an official language. And a Hindi cell was developed in every government office across the nation. So that, Hindi can soon replace English, especially in South Indian states.
It was Rajendra Sinha's 50th birthday on 14 September 1950 and was considered the best occasion to celebrate Hindi Day. The historic day was declared as Hindi Day and every year since that day, we celebrate Hindi Day on 14 September.

Introduction
Hindi Diwas is observed on 14th September every year to commemorate the adoption of Hindi (Devnagari script) as the official language of India. The Legislative Assembly of India passed a resolution in this regard on 14th September 1949.
Hindi Diwas - History
Nearly four decades before the independence, Akhil Bhartiya Hindi SahityaSammelanor All India Hindi Literature Conference, was established on 1st May 1910. It was constituted to promote Hindi and also to encourage writers.
Attending a conference in 1918, Mahatma Gandhi had advocated for establishing Hindi as an official language of India as it is the language of the masses.
At the time of independence, choosing the official language was a bone of contention for the constituent assembly. Many freedom fighters, Hindi laureates, etc advocated for Hindi in Devnagari script as the official language. Some of the famous names crusading for Hindi to be adopted as an official language of the Republic of India were – Hindi literary writer Beohar Rajendra Simha, novelist Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, freedom fighter DattatreyaBalkrishnaKalelkar and Hindi poet Maithili Sharan Gupt among others.
The efforts of Beohar Rajendra Simha in this regard were the most notable of them all. He toured extensively to southern India collecting support for Hindi. He was also the President of Akhil Bhartiya Hindi SahityaSammelan.
The efforts of Beohar Rajendra Simha bore fruits when the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in Devnagari script as the official language of India on 14th September 1949, on the birth date of Mr. Simha.
Celebration

Despite being so popular a language Hindi is losing its hold and is dying slowly due to the increasing popularity of English. Today English is widely used in schools, colleges, and universities of India. It is also the only official language used by private organizations and business houses. Though English is the need of time, it should not be promoted at the cost of Hindi.
Hindi Diwas is very important for it keeps Hindi alive among the masses and is very significant in promoting it. People realize the value of their mother tongue and make efforts to elevate it and keep it alive.

Hindi Day (Hindi: हिन्दी दिवस, romanized: hindī divas) is celebrated in India to commemorate the date 14 September 1949 on which a compromise was reached—during the drafting of the Constitution of India—on the languages that were to have official status in the Republic of India. The compromise, usually called the Munshi-Ayyangar formula, after drafting committee members K. M. Munshi and N. Gopalaswami Ayyangar, was voted by the Constituent Assembly of India after three years of debate between two opposing camps. The Hindi protagonists wanted Hindi to be the sole "national language" of India; the delegates from South India preferred English to have a place in the Constitution. The Munshi-Ayyangar formula declared (i) Hindi to be the "official language" of India's federal government; (ii) English to be an associate official language for 15 years during which Hindi's formal lexicon would be developed; and (iii) the international form of the Hindu-Arabic numerals to be the official numerals. The compromise resolution became articles 343–351 of India's constitution, which went into effect on 26 January 1950. In 1965, when the 15 years were up, the Government of India announced that English would continue to be the "de facto formal language of India."
