Introduction

Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated on 20th August to commemorate the birth anniversary of the 6th Prime Minister of India, Sri Rajiv Gandhi. He was the son of Smt. Indira Gandhi, the third Prime Minister of India who was the daughter of the first Prime Minister of India, Sri Jawaharlal Nehru.

 

A Tribute to Rajiv’s Peace Efforts

Sadbhavana Diwas is observed to commemorate the various efforts towards restoration of peace in India and neighboring countries by Rajiv Gandhi during his tenure as the Prime Minister of India and as the President of the Indian National Congress.

During his tenure as the Prime Minister, in office from 31st October 1984 to 2nd December 1986, he adopted a foreign policy that would put India in a leading position in the world. His foreign policy was exceptionally well crafted and positioned India as a guardian nation that extends support to others facing a crisis, rift, terrorism, etc. All in all the policy of his government was to restore peace in India as well as in the adjoining countries.

 

Rajiv’s Peace Efforts

Throughout his tenure as the Prime Minister, Rajiv took many out of box and revolutionary measures to restore peace in other nations.

He played a vital role in suppressing military coup in the Island country of Seychelles. Threatened by a coup by his military in 1986, the then President of Seychelles, France Albert Rene, requested Rajiv for help. Working on his assertive foreign policy to restore world order, Rajiv sent Indian Navy to Seychelles on an operation code-named ‘Flowers are Blooming’. The operation was successful and the cup was averted.

Rajiv also sent 1500 Indian soldiers to Maldives in 1988 to successfully suppress a military coup and restore the government of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had asked for help from Rajiv.

Similarly, he helped to restore peace in Sri Lanka by devolution power to the Tamil majority areas through Indo-Sri Lanka accord in July 1987. The accord also helped in a dissolution of LTTE (Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelam), a terror outfit demanding separate Tamil state in Sri Lanka.

Representing India in the United Nations General Assembly’s session in 1988, Rajiv expressed his views on a nuclear ammunition free world and proposed that an action plan be realized in this regard.

Several other similar efforts for restoring peace and order in the world had made Rajiv Gandhi a visionary leader of his times.

 

Sadbhavana Diwas Celebrations

Many of the Indian politicians and also from around the world remember Rajiv Gandhi and his efforts for restoring order in the world. Statues of Rajiv Gandhi at several places are felicitated and garlanded by his admirers and politicians on Sadbhavana Diwas.

The day is specifically significant for the Indian National Congress Party, of which Rajiv was the leader and the President from 1985 to 1991. He was the third in line Prime Minister from the same family of politicians belonging to the Indian National Congress.

A special event is held at Veer Bhoomi in New Delhi where Rajiv was cremated. Members of his immediate family and other senior leaders of Congress party visit there, to pay their respect and remember his work and vision.

The Indian National Congress is one of the largest parties in India and has a pan India presence. Celebratory events in the honor of Rajiv Gandhi are held in all the regional offices of the Congress spanning throughout the country.
