Introduction
India celebrates National Flag Adoption Day on 22nd July every year to commemorate the adoption of its national flag; the Tricolor in its present form. The Indian national flag was adopted in its present form by the Constituent Assembly on 22nd July 1947; hardly a month before India gained independence on 15th August 1947.
Evolution of the Indian National Flag
Before 1857 India which was a union consisting of small and big princely states, governed by the British, had no single flag to represent the union. Every princely state had its own flag, differing in size, shape, and color.
After the revolt of 1857, the British rulers expressed concern for a single flag representing India. Hence, came to origin the first flag also called the Star of India, representing the imperial rule of India.
The flag was western in representation and had British Flag, Crown, etc. printed on it. At the beginning of the 19th century, nationalistic sentiment started brewing up and Indian nationalistic leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay started having their own idea about a flag representing the communal and cultural unity of India.
A major breakthrough in this regard came after the 1905 partition of Bengal. A Vande Matram Flag with religious symbols of several communities was adopted to represent the Swadeshi Movement against the British.
In April 1921, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi expressed his desire of a national flag with a spinning wheel or charkha in the middle and thereby summoned Pingali Venkayya to design a flag.
The Swaraj Flag designed by Pingali Venkayya was first hosted on 13th April 1923 to commemorate the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In the next decade, the Swaraj Flag became the representation of Indian Freedom Struggle.
