Rathyatra festival is commemorated annually in Puri, Odisha. It marked Lord Jagannath's annual visit to Gundicha temple and his Maasi Maa (Aunt's) temple. As per Hindu Panchang, the Rathyatra festival is celebrated in the Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month, and as per the Gregorian calendar, it is celebrated in June or July. Annually a grand procession is organized that involves three chariots holding Lord Jagannath, Balbhadra, and Subhadra idols.

People across the nation came to visit the grand procession of Rathyatra. Devotees pull the beautifully decorated chariots. They feel pure by drawing and pulling the chariots. The custom of pulling chariots of deities from Jagannath temple to Gundicha temple with a distance of 2Km.

Lord Jagannath Chariot is called “Nandighosh”. Balbhadra’s chariot is “Taladhwaja” and Subhadra’s chariot is “Darpadalan”. The chariots are decorated with fine artistic carvings. The chariot is constructed by approx 1400 carpenters. The carpenters are passing their art throughout the generation; the same families of carpenters are involved in the construction of deities’ chariots.
