The Rainy Season or more formally addressed as the monsoon season reaches India around the mid of June and stays until late august/early September. This season is primarily categorized by heavy incessant rainfall and humid conditions. Despite the prevalence of humidity, the cool showers bring much-needed respite from the scorching sun.

As it rains, dry barren ponds and puddles are infused with life again. Rivers, yet again, flow at their full capacity and birds chirp all day long. Rains have, since times immemorial, been the favorite season of the land. It fuels flora and fauna enough to bear the brunt of dry barren summers and harsh freezing winters. Flowers bloom in all their full grandeur and crop roots soak up water during this time of the year.

Pre-monsoon showers that precede the actual onset of the monsoon season are known by different names in different regions of the country. They are known as “mango showers “in Karnataka as they help in the early ripening of the juicy fruit. The intensity of rainfall is not uniform but is scattered rather inconsistently. Areas like Cherrapunji receive the most rainfall while areas in the Thar Desert Rajasthan receive scanty rainfall. The rainfall distribution is influenced by numerous factors like the position of mountain ranges and the direction of monsoon winds.

It is not all roses here as the monsoon season does come with a few troubles. Diseases like dengue and malaria spread rampantly during this season. Excessive rainfall has caused floods like the Kedarnath flood in the state of Uttarakhand. Nonetheless, the beauty and euphoria of the Rainy Season are way more magical and encapsulating and this work of Mother Nature is appreciated by the whole of mankind.

Introduction

The rainy season is one of the best seasons of the year also called ‘monsoon’. People love the rainy season for its moderate temperature; it is neither too cold nor too hot during the monsoon. Also, nature is in its full bloom during the monsoon.

When Rainy Season Falls in Different Countries

The months of the rainy season vary from place to place, all over the globe. Somewhere it lasts for a month while some places have longer monsoons. The following points specific places around the globe and rainy season months as per the Gregorian calendar.

  • Kerala, India

Monsoon clouds enter in the south Indian state of Kerala in the first week of June and withdraw in the first week of December.

  • Mumbai, India

In the coastal town of Mumbai, the monsoon arrives on the second week of June and withdraws in the first week of October.

  • Central America

The tentative date of arrival of the rainy season in Central America is in the April month and it recedes in October.

  • Amazon Brazil

The rainy season lasts from September to May.

The Indian monsoon system is by far the most significant of all the monsoon systems across the globe. Tough, the usual monsoon months are from June-September, often the monsoon months extend up to September or even October.

What Causes Rainy Season?

The rainy season throughout the globe is caused due to the changes in annual temperature trends over sea and land. The position of the Sun with respect to earth shifts between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.

Solar heating over the sea leads to the creation of low-pressure areas. This low-pressure zone also called Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) witnesses the convergence of northeast and southeast trade winds. This convergence causes moisture to rise above in the atmosphere and form clouds. When the clouds are overladen with moisture, rain occurs. The shift of this ITCZ zone towards land areas causes rain there.

The same phenomenon is behind the occurrence of the Indian monsoon. During the peak summer months i.e. May-June, the Thar Desert and other parts of North, as well as Central India, heat up. This heating leads to the creation of a low-pressure zone over the sub-continent. This further leads to the shifting of ITCZ from the Indian Ocean to the land, rushing in the moisture-laden winds, consequently causing rains.

Importance of Rainy Season

The rainy season is very important from the point of view of irrigation. Paddy or rice which is a major crop produced in the Indian sub-continent depends entirely on the amount of rain. It is sown in the month of June-July and harvested in November-December and requires a certain water level to be maintained in fields. Thus, the rainy season plays a significant role in Paddy cultivation and decides the fate of millions of agriculture-based households in the sub-continent.

On the other hand, the rainy season is also necessary to maintain the natural water resources level. Lakes, underground water, and seasonal rivers all dry up during the hot summer days and are only brought back to life during the monsoon. The rainy season prepares the earth and replenishes its resources for the coming harsh climatic seasons.

Conclusion

The rainy season is a very important season, which is necessary for the life cycle to continue. It is very important for replenishing the groundwater reserves and also for agriculture. Countries with agriculture-based economies like India depend hugely on the rains during the monsoon for the production of crops and vegetables. It is also the most loved season in the world. Children, young and adults, all love it for the pure beauty of the nature that it reveals.

FAQs on Paragraph on Rainy Season in English

Few Lines on Importance of Rainy Season??

The wet season (sometimes called the Rainy season) is the time of year when most of a region's average annual rainfall occurs. It is the time of year where the majority of a country's or region's annual precipitation occurs.Generally, the season lasts at least a month. The term green season is also sometimes used as a euphemism by tourist authorities. Areas with wet seasons are dispersed across portions of the tropics and subtropics.

Under the Köppen climate classification, for tropical climates, a wet season month is defined as a month where average precipitation is 60 millimetres (2.4 in) or more. In contrast to areas with savanna climates and monsoon regimes, Mediterranean climates have wet winters and dry summers. Dry and rainy months are characteristic of tropical seasonal forests: in contrast to tropical rainforests, which do not have dry or wet seasons, since their rainfall is equally distributed throughout the year. Some areas with pronounced rainy seasons will see a break in rainfall mid-season, when the intertropical convergence zone or monsoon trough moves to higher latitudes in the middle of the warm season.

When the wet season occurs during a warm season, or summer, precipitation falls mainly during the late afternoon and early evening. In the wet season, air quality improves, fresh water quality improves, and vegetation grows substantially, leading to crop yields late in the season. Rivers overflow their banks, and some animals retreat to higher ground. Soil nutrients diminish and erosion increases. The incidence of malaria and dengue increases in areas where the rainy season coincides with high temperatures, particularly in tropical areas. Some animals have adaptation and survival strategies for the wet season. Often, the previous dry season leads to food shortages in the wet season, as the crops have yet to mature. Crops which can be successfully planted during the wet or rainy season are cassava, maize, groundnut , millet and yam.
