In India, Martyr’s Day or Shaheed Divas is observed mainly on January 30 and March 23 annually. On a national level, the day is addressed as the Sarvodaya day. On this day, the Nation observes two minutes of silence and honors all freedom fighters’ contributions during the Indian Freedom Movement.

Martyr’s Day holds great significance in India’s struggle for freedom as on January 30, 1948. Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi at the Birla house. The country also mourns India’s heroes, namely, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on March 23, who was hanged by the British Government in 1931.

How is Marty’s Day commemorated?

The President of India, along with the Prime Minister and Defence Minister of India, gather on January 30, at the Rajghat, the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. They pay homage and tribute through a garland of flowers to the statue of Gandhiji.

This action is followed by an honorable salute by India’s armed forces personnel and inter-services contingent to pay reverence and homage to all the Martyr of our country.

However, it is also commemorated on 30 January since it was on this day in 1948 that Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse.

On this day, the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and the three service chiefs (Army, Air Force, and Navy) come together to lay floral wreaths at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi in Raj Ghat, New Delhi.

A two-minute silence is also observed across the nation at 11:00 AM in honour of the bravehearts of India, who sacrificed their lives without a second thought during the freedom struggle.

  1. Bhagat Singh and his companions were executed in the year 1931 because they threw explosives at the Central Legislative Assembly while shouting the slogan 'Inquillab Zindabad' on 8 April 1929.

  2. The ashes of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were scattered on the banks of the Sutlej river.

  3. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse at the Birla House on 30 January 1948, when he was on the premises for evening prayers.

  4. Martyrs' Day is also celebrated on 19 May, 21 October, 17 November, and 24 November, for various reasons in India.
