Introduction

The Indian flag is not only a symbol of independence but it also represents the sacrifices, the devotion, and the love of people to their nation. Looking at the tricolor flag makes us feel proud of our country. The Indian Armed Forces continuously work to maintain the glory of the flag. Therefore, to further maintain this glory it is important to monitor the proper display of the national flag. This raises the need to establish the Flag Code of India.

What is the Flag Code of India?

The Flag Code of India is a set of laws that provide instructions on how to properly use the Indian National Flag. According to the code, the Government of India has issued guidelines regarding the size, shape, and color of the flag, as well as how to correctly fly the National Flag.

On January 26, 2002, the Flag Code of India was come into effect by replacing all the previous versions of the Flag Code of India. However, it was not meant to replace the existing rules, it was an attempt to bring together all of the previous laws, conventions, and practices. Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950 (No.12 of 1950) and Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 were combined in the Flag Code 2002.

Features of the Flag Code of India

There are three sections in the Flag Code of India, 2002. A general description of the National Flag can be found in Part I of the Code. In Part II, the rules for public and private organizations, educational institutions, and others for displaying the National Flag are mentioned. Section III specifies how the National Flag is to be displayed by the national and state governments along with their agencies and organizations. Some of the features of the Flag Code of India are:

  • Any person or thing cannot be saluted with the tricolor, nor can it be used for commercial purposes.
  • You should not use the flag as a festoon or decorate anything.
  • According to the flag code, the tricolor should always be prominently displayed and hold an honorable position.
  • Flags must conform to the specifications and bear the marks of the Bureau of Indian Standards to be used for official display.
  • A damaged tricolor should be destroyed privately, preferably by burning or in accordance with its dignity.
  • As a mark of respect during mourning, the tricolor can be flown at half-mast when a head of state or dignitary has passed away or when state funerals are held.

Amendments to the Flag Code of India

According to the Flag Code of India, machine-made and polyester flags were not allowed. On 30 December 2021, the Flag Code of India was amended to allow polyester, apart from cotton, wool, silk, and khadi, to be used for hand woven, handspun, and machine-made flags.

Earlier it was also mentioned that despite weather conditions, the flag should only be displayed from sunrise to sunset. Another amendment was also made on 20 July 2022 for the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. Now it is allowed to fly the national flag at home during the day or at night.

Conclusion

We are proud of our Indian National Flag. It represents the hopes and aspirations of the Indian people. Our duty as responsible Indian citizens is to follow the set of instructions specified in the Flag Code of India, 2002 to ensure the honor, dignity, and pride of our National flag.

I hope the above provided essay on the Flag Code of India will be helpful in understanding the correct method of hoisting and respecting our national flag.
